Baofeng Lake
A green reservoir in a high gorge, toured by boat, with Tujia love songs echoing off the cliffs. Ninety minutes, almost no stairs.
After two days of staircases, Baofeng Lake is the recovery session. A dammed reservoir sits inside a limestone gorge about 10 minutes from Wulingyuan town, and the visit is essentially one thing done well: a slow boat ride between cliffs, with a guide singing Tujia folk songs that bounce off the rock walls.
It is not the most spectacular sight in Zhangjiajie. It is the most restful, and for families with small children or travellers with limited mobility it may be the day everyone remembers.
What the visit involves
You walk in from the ticket gate along a short lakeside path, board a flat-bottomed tour boat, and cruise for 30–40 minutes to the head of the lake and back. The water is an unnaturally vivid green; the cliffs rise several hundred metres on both sides.
Two moments are staged: a Tujia singer on the shore exchanging songs with the boat, and a narrow passage where the boat threads between two rock walls. It is gentle, faintly theatrical, and entirely pleasant.
Back at the dock, a short loop walk climbs to a viewpoint over the gorge. Allow 20 minutes. Total visit: 90 minutes to two hours.

Is it worth it?
Yes, under three conditions: you have a spare half-day, your legs are tired, or you are travelling with children or older relatives. No, if you are on a two-day trip and choosing between this and a second morning in the park.
| If you are… | Verdict |
|---|---|
| On a 2-day trip | Skip it — the park matters more |
| On a 3–4 day trip | Perfect filler on a transfer day |
| Travelling with kids under 8 | Do it — flat, short, boats |
| Travelling with limited mobility | One of the few fully accessible sights |
| A photographer | Go at opening, before the boats stack up |
Tickets and timing
Tickets are around ¥108 including the boat, cheaper for children and free for under-1.3 m. It is usually possible to buy at the gate; booking ahead matters only in October and the May holidays.
- Boats run roughly 07:30–17:30; the first and last departures are the quietest.
- The site is 10 minutes by taxi from Wulingyuan town (¥15–25), or a 30-minute walk from the main strip.
- Combine with Huanglong Cave for a full day, or with the glass bridge if you are heading east.
- There is a short staircase from the dock to the viewpoint; the boat itself is step-free.
