Tianmen Mountain
A 7.5-kilometre cable car, a 131-metre hole through the cliff, 999 steps and a glass walkway bolted to the rock face.
Tianmen is the counterweight to the national park: one mountain instead of a range, one cable car instead of a bus network, and a single dramatic image — the enormous natural arch of Heaven’s Gate, with 999 steps climbing to it through the forest.
It sits immediately south of Zhangjiajie city, which makes it the natural thing to do on your arrival or departure day. The cable car alone is worth the ticket: 7,455 metres from the city centre to the summit, climbing over rooftops, then farmland, then a wall of limestone.
What is actually up there
- Heaven’s Gate (Tianmen Cave) — a 131.5 m high natural arch through the mountain, formed by collapse. The 999 steps below it are the postcard, and they are steep.
- The cable car — 7,455 m, roughly 30 minutes, with a mid-station at the temple. Sit on the right going up for the city view, left coming down for the cliff.
- Coiled Dragon Cliff glass walkway — 60 m of glass glued to a vertical cliff at about 1,400 m, with a ¥5–10 shoe-cover charge. Short, uncomfortable, memorable.
- Ghost Valley plank road — a 1,600 m cliff-hugging boardwalk, quieter than the glass walkway and arguably scarier because it is real rock underfoot.
- Tianmen Mountain Temple — a reconstructed Buddhist-Taoist-Confucian complex near the summit, and the best place to warm up.
- The 99-bend road — the switchback bus route up the north face. If your ticket includes the bus, take it one way; it is half the experience.

The summit loop is about 3 km of cliff paths and escalators. There is a “mountain-through escalator” system that carries you down inside the rock from the arch to the bus station — 7 escalators, 12 minutes, no walking required.
Route options: A, B and C
Tianmen sells three route types, and the difference matters more than the price.
| Route | Up | Down | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Cable car from the city | Bus + 99 bends | Most people. Best views, longest cable queue. |
| B | Bus + 99 bends | Cable car | Late arrivals and anyone who gets motion sick on the bends. |
| C | Bus to the arch, escalator up | Bus down | When the cable car is sold out or closed by wind. |
Tickets are timed. The morning slots (8:00–10:00) give you the best chance of clear summit views, because cloud often builds by early afternoon. In winter, the cable car can be suspended for ice and the bus route takes over entirely.

At 1,500 m you are inside the cloud layer more often than above it. If the forecast is solid rain, move Tianmen to your departure morning rather than burning the ticket. Re-entry requires a new ticket, so do not buy days ahead unless your dates are fixed.
A five-hour plan
- 08:00 — arrive at the city cableway station (10 minutes’ walk from the railway station). Security, then board.
- 08:30–09:00 — ride up. Watch the city disappear.
- 09:00–11:00 — West line cliff walk: Ghost Valley plank road, glass walkway, temple. This is the quietest window.
- 11:00–12:00 — East line to the arch viewpoint, then descend the 999 steps (or take the escalator if knees object).
- 12:00–12:30 — escalators down through the mountain to the bus station.
- 12:30–13:00 — 99-bend bus back to the city, or cable car if your ticket is route B.
Add an hour if you are travelling with children, and another if it is a holiday.
Tickets, queues and small print
The combined ticket is around ¥278 and includes the cable car (or bus), park entry and the mountain escalators. The glass walkways charge a small shoe-cover fee on the spot. Children under 1.3 m and seniors over 65 get discounts similar to the national park.
- Buy online for a specific time slot in peak season; walk-up tickets can sell out by mid-morning on weekends.
- Bags go through security. Tripods and drones are not permitted on the summit paths.
- The 999 steps are optional — there is an escalator route beside them, and most people take it down rather than up.
- Wear proper shoes. The cliff paths are stone and get slick in rain.
- Allow 30–40 minutes to get from Wulingyuan to the cableway station by taxi (¥80–120).

Do it on your way out
Tianmen is 20 minutes from the airport. The 3-day route puts it on departure morning, with luggage stored at the cableway station.
