The four-day route
we would book again
Two and a half days of pillars, one of glass and cable cars, and an evening in the city that does not require an alarm.
Four days is where Zhangjiajie stops being a checklist. You get the Avatar plateau, the quiet western ridge, a valley morning, the glass bridge and Tianmen — with enough slack to lose an afternoon to fog and not care.
It also lets you sleep in the same bed for three nights, which matters more than any single viewpoint.
The route, day by day
Wulingyuan, then Yuanjiajie at golden hour
Morning flight or high-speed train, transfer to Wulingyuan, check in. Buy the pass, then take the 15:00 shuttle to Bailong Elevator — the afternoon queue is shorter than the morning one and the light is warmer.
Yuanjiajie loop until closing: First Bridge Under Heaven, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, Soul-Dispelling Platform. Dinner in town: cured pork with wild herbs, or sanxia guo.
- ¥227 pass, ¥72 elevator
- Gate closes around 17:30 in winter, 18:30 in summer
Yuanjiajie at dawn, Tianzi in the afternoon
Back up early — yes, again — because the plateau at 08:00 and the plateau at 11:00 are different places. This time walk the full loop and take the ridge path west.
After lunch, shuttle to Tianzi Mountain: Imperial Brush Peak, Fairy Girl, Helong Park. Cable car down (¥72). If you have energy, Golden Whip Stream for an hour before the gate closes.
- 12–15k steps
- Bring 2 litres of water; in-park prices are double
Yangjiajie + Golden Whip Stream
Yangjiajie in the morning via its own cable car (¥76): the Natural Great Wall, the western panorama, and a fraction of the crowds. Two to three hours, steep in places.
Afternoon: Golden Whip Stream from the Forest Park gate — flat, 7.5 km end to end, macaques, and the pillars from below. Exit at the south gate and taxi back.
- This is the day to slow down
- Dinner: 72 Wonders night market if you move into the city early
Grand Canyon bridge + Tianmen or departure
Check out, store bags, and drive east to the glass bridge (30 minutes). Early slot, cross the bridge, walk the canyon down — 2.5 to 3 hours total.
Then either Tianmen on the way to the airport, or a straight transfer with a stop at 72 Wonders for lunch. If your flight is late, add Baofeng Lake (90 minutes) instead — it is on the Wulingyuan side.
- Bridge ¥128–219 + ¥38 shuttle
- Tianmen ¥278 if you add it
- 72 Wonders ¥88 if you go in
- Leave 3 hours before an international flight
The evening shows, and how to choose one
Zhangjiajie runs three big night shows and they are not interchangeable. All three sell out in the first week of October and on summer weekends; on an ordinary Tuesday in April you can decide at lunchtime.
- Charming Xiangxi (魅力湘西) — indoor theatre in Wulingyuan, two hours of Tujia and Miao song, dance and acrobatics. The safest choice after a park day: warm, dry, and five minutes from most hotels. ¥178–588 by seat.
- Tianmen Fox Fairy (天门狐仙) — staged outdoors in the gorge below Tianmen Mountain, with the cliff lit as the backdrop. The best-looking of the three and the only one that cancels in heavy rain.
- Qian Gu Qing (千古情) — part theatre, part banquet: you eat at a long table while the cast works the room between courses. The least serious, and the easiest one for children and groups.

Book through your hotel or the ticketing mini-program, never from the touts outside the gate, and ask whether the shuttle from the Wulingyuan strip is included — most of them run one, and the car park at the end of the evening is the worst part of the night.
One show is enough for four days. If the weather has been clear, spend the second evening on the hotel roof instead — it is free, and the pillars go pink before they go dark.
