Three days in Zhangjiajie
The version most first-timers should book: two park days, Tianmen on the way out, and no 5 am starts.
Three days buys you breathing room. You see the two essential zones of the park without sprinting, add the quiet western ridge if the weather holds, and still get Tianmen on the last day before your train.
Stay in Wulingyuan for two nights and the city for one. That single change removes the 45-minute commute from your two most important mornings.
The route, day by day
Check in, then Yuanjiajie
Land or arrive by midday, transfer to Wulingyuan (45 minutes), drop bags. Buy the park pass at the gate — the four-day clock starts on first scan, so there is no reason to buy early.
Afternoon: Bailong Elevator up, Yuanjiajie loop. Late light on the pillars is better than midday, and the tour buses leave by 16:00. Down by elevator, dinner in town.
- ¥227 pass + ¥72 elevator
- 2.5 hours on the plateau
- Sleep: Wulingyuan, near the gate
Tianzi Mountain + Yangjiajie
Out by 07:00. Shuttle to Tianzi Mountain for the morning light on Imperial Brush Peak and Fairy Girl Scattering Flowers. Cable car down, lunch, then shuttle west to Yangjiajie.
Yangjiajie is the park’s quiet corner: the Natural Great Wall ridge, One-Step-to-Heaven if you like ladders, and far fewer people. Two to three hours, then the cable car down (¥76) and a shuttle back.
- ¥72 Tianzi cable car + ¥76 Yangjiajie cable car
- 14–18k steps
- Optional evening: Charming Xiangxi (¥178–588)
Golden Whip Stream, then Tianmen
Early Golden Whip Stream from the Forest Park gate: flat, green, monkeys, and a completely different sense of scale. Two hours out and back, then collect your bag and transfer to the city.
Tianmen in the afternoon with a pre-booked slot. Cable car up, cliff walkways, Heaven’s Gate, escalators down, and you are 20 minutes from the airport or 10 from the railway station.
- Tianmen ~¥278
- Leave 5 hours before your flight
- Luggage: hotel storage or the cableway station
