Five days: Zhangjiajie
+ an ancient town
The classic Hunan pairing — three days of sandstone, then a waterfall town or a river town where the lights come on at dusk.
Zhangjiajie is intense. Ancient towns are the opposite, which is why they pair so well. Five days lets you do the mountains properly and still have two nights where the only decision is which riverside restaurant to sit in.
Two options: Fenghuang (Phoenix Town), 1 hour by high-speed rail plus 20 minutes by road, the bigger and more famous; or Furong, 1.5 hours by road, smaller, built around a waterfall, and considerably quieter.
The route, day by day
Wulingyuan + Yuanjiajie
Transfer in, buy the park pass, and take the late-afternoon elevator up to Yuanjiajie. The plateau empties out after 16:00 and the low sun does good things to the pillars.
Tianzi Mountain + Yangjiajie
The full circuit: Tianzi in the morning light, Yangjiajie in the afternoon. Cable cars both ways. This is the day you will take the most photographs.
Golden Whip Stream, then 72 Wonders
Morning on the valley floor, then transfer to the city in the afternoon. Check in near the cableway station, and spend the evening at 72 Wonders — the stilted tower complex with the night market at its base.
- Good places to eat: the lanes behind 72 Wonders, not the front row
- Book a city hotel within walking distance of the Tianmen cableway
Mountain in the morning, ancient town by evening
Tianmen first thing, luggage stored at the hotel. Cable car up, cliff paths, Heaven’s Gate, escalators down by early afternoon.
Then the transfer: high-speed rail from Zhangjiajie West to Fenghuang (about 1 hour, ¥60–90) plus a 20-minute taxi, or a direct bus (2.5–3 hours, ~¥80) if you are heading to Furong. Check into a riverside guesthouse and go for a walk after dark, when the town is at its best.
Ancient town at dawn, then home
Up early for the mist on the river — the reason people photograph these towns. Breakfast of rice noodles and fried dough, a last walk through the old streets, then out by 11:00.
Fenghuang to Tongren Phoenix airport is 40 minutes by taxi; to Changsha about 3 hours by rail. If you must return to Zhangjiajie, the direct bus takes 2.5–3 hours.
Fenghuang or Furong?
| Fenghuang | Furong | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 1 hr rail + 20 min road | 1.5 hrs by road |
| Feel | Big, famous, busy at night | Small, waterfall, quieter |
| Best for | First-timers, photographers | Couples, slow travellers |
| Entry | Free (sights ¥10–50 each) | Free town, paid waterfall path |
